Bad Mood Cure: Nature

A few weeks ago I was having one of those days, you know, where everything feels off even though nothing really is. Things just don’t feel right and it makes you grumpy and feel all out of sorts. It’s rather unpleasant. So I ran through my list of things that I do to shake that feeling off and all of them made me feel quite meh. Nothing was singing to me and then a beautiful thought came to me and it just felt so perfect.

Go outside in nature.

outsideAs the thought flowed into my head I felt absolutely giddy. Like a kid that had been grounded forever and finally been given leave to go outside and run through the grass and let all of her cares slip away. So I went to the park and I kicked off my shoes and I sat on a bench and I turned my face to the sun and felt the earth underneath me and I pulled out a romance novel and sat there and read.

It was the most healing experience I’ve had in a long time.

The little things do that. It was a good reminder that healing comes in so many different forms and so many of them are simple. All you have to do is tap into those basic human needs. Fresh air, sunshine, and freedom. We make it so difficult on ourselves, always searching searching searching for that thing that will fill us up and make us whole and sometimes it’s as easy as reverting back to an eight-year-old and letting yourself be free.

When was the last time you went outside just for the joy of being outside?

Or colored with crayons or sidewalk chalk, or spent a Saturday morning watching cartoons? Don’t make it so hard to be happy. Find the delight in the little things. Find the extraordinary in the ordinary things in life. Think of the things that you used to love as a child and then do them. As kids there were so many wonderful things happening in our lives. Little things like the joy of a sandbox or running around barefoot. There were so many paths, easy paths, to happiness.

It didn’t take work then and it doesn’t have to take work now. Practice awareness. Pay attention to what your soul is asking for. Simplify things. Don’t be afraid of happiness, you deserve to feel it.
